A Junior in yeshiva university

My name is Isay Ildatov and I am a junior in Yeshiva University. I grew up in a unorthodox gorsky family in Brooklyn but over the years after lots of research and soul searching I decided to try to learn more about my religion. For a while now I have wanted to dedicate something to this journal but I had no idea what. One of my rebbeim suggested to discuss something that has to do with everyday life and can reach out to everybody. Then he mentioned Pirkei Avot also know as Ethics of our Fathers. This is a section of the oral law split into 6 pereks or chapters and each Perek is made up of passages called mishnas. The reason I decided to use this because Pirkei Avot is not just rules but guidelines on how to lead a healthy life. Before I start discussing Pirkei Avot I am going to discuss a passage from Sanhedrin. Every Shabbat between Pesach and Shavous a Perek is read and this passage is used as an introduction.

The Caucasian Mountain Jews

For many centuries, the so-called Caucasian Mountain Jews have been living isolated in their remote and lofty auls, or villages. Until recently, they were almost unknown to the outside world, their extraordinary history waiting to be unearthed.

These unique people—formerly oppressed, now awakening to a new existence—first came to my attention in 1933, when in Moscow I happened upon a series of photographs depicting their peculiarly biblical and patriarchal life.
